SEX AND GRADE LEVEL DIFFERENCES IN MARIJUANA USE AMONG YOUTH

Worried about the potential "harm" that can be caused by juveniles using cannabis, KEITH A. KING, PH.D., MCHES REBECCA A. VIDOUREK, PH.D., CHES ASHLEE R. HOFFMAN, MA, MS of the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, conducted a survey of 54,361 students from 7th grade to the 12th grade, to discover how many of them have used cannabis before and find out things such as; How easy it was for them to come about possessing the drug, and the outlook on the use of cannabis by parents involved. During the survey it was discovered that more male children experimented with the use of this drug then the female population. Of the 36.8% of school children that admitted to have used the drug, 39% were males and 34.3% were females. They go on to explain that a main reason that this many kids smoke is the decrease in the public view on the danger of the use of cannabis as well as the perception held by parents. An overwhelming piece of information is that 90% of the youth asked said that they could access cannabis fairly easy.

One issue that I have with this journal is that throughout they mention the extreme danger the use of cannabis to the youth, however they never seem to mention what those issues are, aside from the potential for further experimentation with other drugs aka the gateway theory, which is a flawed theory to being with.
