Recreational "Weekend" MDMA Use Can Lead to Memory Impairment

Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or ecstasy) is a common drug associated with the heavy party lifestyle. Recreational use of the drug is usually isolated to one or two days a week, primarily on the weekend. Use of MDMA, even frequent use, is usually separated by 5 days of abstinence. Researchers, aware of this pattern of use, created a study of MDMA use in test rats to see if there was any relation between MDMA use and memory and cognition functioning in frequent users. The results proved there were.

In a laboratory test, researchers were able to find a correlation between proper memory functioning and MDMA use in just two consecutive weekends of use. The rats were tested at weekends 1 through 4 to see the differences in memory function. Researchers were able to find that in fact, MDMA use over time had led to memory deficits. The findings were consistent with previous studies researching similar effects on the brain for frequent MDMA users.

It seems as though, the study may be a launch pad for further studying into the effects of the drug on the brain, primarily in regular "weekend" users.
